Crimes against women: State at top place for second year in row
In 2010, 27,244 cases were registered, accounting for 12.8 p.c. of all India total
For the second consecutive year, Andhra Pradesh achieved the dubious distinction of topping the list in crimes against women during 2010 with 27,244 cases registered, accounting for 12.8 per cent of the all India total.
In 2009, the State registered 25,569 cases of crimes against women, which again was the highest in the country. The statistics released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in its report for 2010 reveal some disquieting data pertaining to the State.
Among crimes against women, cruelty by husbands accounted for 12,080 cases, sexual harassment 4,562, molestation 4,634, kidnapping 1,531, rape 1,362 and immoral trafficking 548. The offences against women, in fact, formed a major chunk of total cognisable cases in the State, at 32.4 per cent.
The NCRB statistics also revealed that the State ranked sixth in the country in the category of crimes against children, with 1,823 cases at 6.8 per cent of the all India total. Of this, 581 related to kidnapping, while 745 cases were pending (28.2 per cent pendency).
Among 28 States and seven Union Territories, the State accounted for the second highest number of cases registered by the police in the country, with 8.2 per cent in the all India total.
It stood next only to Uttar Pradesh, with 8,09,996 cases registered under IPC and Special and Local Laws (SLL), while UP accounted for 22,87,799 such cases during 2010. In fact, Andhra Pradesh leads all the southern States so far with regard to the number of cases registered by the police. The State, however,
clarified that this was due to the higher number of cognisable cases registered under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Criminality rank
In the rank of criminality, however (on the basis of total cognisable crimes), the State ranks 13th, (8.2 per cent of all India total) much below Kerala's no.1 rank, Tamil Nadu's 6th and Karnataka's 8{+t}{+h} rank.
The report, ‘Crime in India' released by the NCRB, is an annual publication presenting detailed information on various aspects of crime and criminal administration in the country and aimed at helping governments design effective strategies to combat crime.
Among data compiled for 35 cities across the country, the criminality rank of Vijayawada is 5th,
Visakhapatnam 8th and Hyderabad 20th, making the State capital safer than the other two cities.
