Future terrorists to come from Hindu, Christian religions too: US report

An official US report has warned that future terrorists could come from many different religions, including Christianity and Hinduism. The reports added that right-wing and left-wing ideological groups will also pose threats.

The report, however said it hopes that the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq and a reduced military presence in Afghanistan will also decrease the terrorists'' ability to use America for stirring up Muslim anger, reports The Dawn.

 "The Future of Terrorism" is part of a larger report that studies global trends between now and 2030. The report stated that US support for Israel could be the last remaining major focus of Muslim anger. It further said that several circumstances are ending the current Islamist phase of terrorism, indicating that "the recent religious wave is receding and could end by 2030".

It further said that terrorism is unlikely to die completely because it has no single cause. The report stated that although Al-Qaeda and others have focused on the United States as a clear enemy, the appeal of the United States as the "great enemy" is declining. According to the report, moral resurgence of secular democracy in the Arab world will also help defuse terrorism as the Arab uprisings were non-violent struggles.

 It added that future generations in the Arab and Muslim worlds may not agree with the perceptions of the older generations and may not want to carry on their battles. The report stated that many states might continue to use terrorist groups; exploiting terrorist movements out of a strong sense of insecurity. It claimed that states such as Pakistan and Iran feel threatened by what they perceive as stronger, threatening powers in their regions or globally.


Therefore, they seek asymmetric options to assert power and deter attack; using terrorist groups as proxies and pursuing nuclear weapons are two such asymmetric tools. However, the report concludes by saying that international disapproval of state support for terrorist movements has increased significantly, and the costs to a regime of directly supporting terrorists looks set to become even greater as international cooperation increases

Muslim women on top in the battle against premarital sex: US Study

The burqa really works. When you cover your women head to toe with cloth to keep them from being viewed by men outside their family, and you keep them strictly segregated from men throughout their growing years until they get married, you’re going to have less premarital sex.

That was the Rev Paul Sullins’ reaction to a new study on sex outside marriage. Sullins is a sociologist at the Catholic University of America.

With their “True Love Waits” jewelry, conferences and T-shirts, Christians may be the face of the abstinence movement, but Muslims are more likely to abstain from premarital sex.

Of all the world's major religious groups, Muslims are the least likely to have sex outside of marriage, new research found. And as a country's Muslim population grows, the rate of premarital sex declines for all residents, even non-Muslims, according to the study.

Researchers analyzed the responses of over 620,000 people (ages 15-59) who were interviewed as part of the Demographic and Health Surveys in 31 mostly developing nations from 2000 to 2008. Most countries included in the sample had either a Muslim or Christian majority, except India and Nepal, which have Hindu majorities, and Cambodia which has a Buddhist majority. (The United States was not included in the study.)

That’s the conclusion of a new study in the American Sociological Review, which also found that Muslims and Hindus — at least in the developing world — are more likely than Christians and Jews to refrain from extramarital sex.

“All major world religions discourage sex outside of marriage, but they are not all equally effective in shaping behavior,” said Amy Adamczyk of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, who co-authored the study with John Jay doctoral student Brittany E. Hayes.

Adamczyk said the study evolved from another study she was doing that found countries with large Muslim populations have very low rates of HIV and AIDS. “I was trying to figure out why that would be,” she said. One reason she considered was lower rates of sex outside of marriage.

“In many countries around the world — but in Muslim countries specifically, there’s just much less interaction between the sexes,” said Adamczyk. “It’s just going to be much less likely that they’re going to meet a potentially romantic partner.”

Drawing on the Demographic and Health Surveys funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, the study included data from 31 developing nations collected between 2000 and 2008. The authors focused on individuals’ responses to questions on religious affiliation, marital status, and sexual behavior outside of marriage.

The authors hypothesized that the larger the proportion of Muslims and Hindus in a country, the lower the rates of premarital and extramarital sex.

Adamczyk and Hayes found that 94 percent of Jews in the nations they studied reported having premarital sex, compared to 79 percent of Christians, 65 percent of Buddhists and 43 percent of Muslims.

As for extramarital sex, 4 percent of Jews reported having sex outside of marriage, compared to 3 percent of Christians. Less than one percent each of Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists reported having extramarital sex.

Suzy Ismail, a marriage and divorce counselor and the author of several books on Muslim marriage, said low rates of premarital and extramarital sex among Muslims are rooted in the religion.

తెలంగాణ సమస్యను పరిష్కరించాలని కోరే పార్టీలే.. సమస్యను ఎప్పటికప్పుడు మరింత జటిలం చేస్తూ పోతున్న వైచివూతికి రాష్ట్ర రాజకీయాలు అద్దంపడుతున్నాయి. వైఖరి చెప్పేసిన పార్టీ లు బిందాస్. ప్రత్యేక రాష్ట్ర సాధనకే పుట్టిన టీఆర్‌ఎస్ వైఖరి విస్పష్టంగా ఉంది. సమైక్యవాదం నుంచి జై తెలంగాణ నినాదం అందుకున్న సీపీఐ.. రాష్ట్ర సాధన సమరంలో దూసుకుపోతున్నది. పార్లమెంటులో బిల్లు పెడితే ఆమోదం పొందేందుకు బేషరతు సహకారానికి బీజేపీ సై అంది. హైదరాబాద్ సహిత తెలంగాణ లేదా రాయల తెలంగాణ అని ఎంఐఎం తేల్చి చెప్పింది. తాను సమైక్యవాదినేనని సీపీఎం కుండబద్దలు కొట్టేసింది! ఇక మిగిలింది మూడు పార్టీలే. తెలంగాణపై ఆది నుంచి దోబూచులాడుతున్న ఆ పార్టీలకే ఇప్పుడు సంకట స్థితి. అందుకే ఈసారి జరిగే అఖిలపక్ష సమావేశం ఆ మూడు పార్టీల్లో గుబులురేపుతున్నది. తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్రం విషయంలో ‘డిసెంబర్ 9’ ప్రకటన శిలాశాసనంగా యావత్ తెలంగాణ ప్రాంతం విశ్వసిస్తున్నది. ఏనాడో సిద్ధించిన రాష్ట్రాన్ని ఆచరణలోకి తేవడమే మిగిలిన ఎజెండాగా భావిస్తున్నది. ఈ క్రమంలోనే అడ్డుపడుతున్న పార్టీలకు అల్టిమేటాలు జారీ అవుతున్నాయి.

తెలంగాణ విషయంలో దోబూచులను నమ్మబోమని తెలంగాణ ప్రజలు ఇప్పటికే తమ తీర్పులు వెలువరించారు. వరుస ఉప ఎన్నికల్లో తెలంగాణవాదానికి పట్టంగట్టారు. వ్యతిరేక పార్టీల శవపేటికలకు ఒక్కో ఉప ఎన్నికలో ఒక్కో మేకు దించుతూ వచ్చారు. ఇక పతాక సన్నివేశం!! అఖిలపక్ష సమావేశాన్ని ఏర్పాటు చేయడం వెనుక ఉన్న అనేక మతలబులను తెలంగాణ సమాజం చూసింది. కేంద్రంలో తన ఉనికిని ప్రశ్నార్థకం చేసిన ఎఫ్‌డీఐల ఓటింగ్ గండం నుంచి గట్టెక్కేందుకే ఈ అఖిలపక్షం హామీ వచ్చిందన్నది జగమెరిగిన సత్యం. అఖిలపక్షంతో సాధించేది ఏమీ లేదని, ఇది కేవలం కొత్త హోం మంత్రి సుశీల్ కుమార్ షిండే అవగాహన కోసం ఏర్పాటు చేసిందేనంటూ రాష్ట్ర కాంగ్రెస్ వ్యవహారాల మంత్రి గులాం నబీ ఆజాద్ తేల్చిపారేశారు. ఈ సమావేశం ఉత్తుత్తిదేనని హోం శాఖ వర్గాలు లీకులు కూడా ఇచ్చాయి.

అయితే సూక్ష్మంలో మోక్షం అన్నట్లు.. ఈ సమావేశం తెలంగాణవాదానికి ఒక మూలమలుపుగా కూడా మారనుంది. ఇప్పటి వరకూ కాంగ్రెస్, టీడీపీ, వైఎస్సార్సీపీ తెలంగాణకు వ్యతిరేకం కాదని చెబుతూ వస్తున్నాయి. టీడీపీ ఒక అడుగు ముందుకు వేసి.. అఖిలపక్షం ఏర్పాటు చేస్తే అందులోనే తమ అభివూపాయం చెబుతామని ప్రకటనలు చేసింది. ఇప్పుడు సమయం వచ్చింది. తాము ప్రత్యేక తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్ర ఏర్పాటుకు వ్యతిరేకం కాదన్న వాదననైనా ఆ పార్టీలు చెప్పాల్సిన పరిస్థితి వచ్చింది. వైఖరి చెప్పకపోతే తెలంగాణ ప్రాంతంలో ఈ మూడు పార్టీలను సమాధి చేయడానికి సిద్ధంగా ఉన్నామని ఇప్పటికే తెలంగాణ ఉద్యమక్షిశేణులు స్పష్టమైన సంకేతాలు ఇచ్చి ఉన్నాయి. ముసుగులో గుద్దులాటలను ఇక విశ్వసించే స్థితిలో ఈ ప్రాంతం ప్రజలు లేరని వెల్లడైపోయింది. అందుకే ఈ గండం నుంచి గట్టెక్కేందుకు రాజకీయ పార్టీలు మల్లగుల్లాలు పడుతున్నాయి. అయితే.. తమ వైఖరి చెప్పకుండా తప్పించుకునేందుకు మార్గాన్వేషణ చేస్తున్న ఈ మూడు పార్టీలు.. నెపాన్ని ఎదుటివారిపైకి నెట్టేసే ఆలోచన చేస్తున్నాయని ఆయా పార్టీల నేతల వ్యాఖ్యలను బట్టి అర్థమ వుతోంది.

మొత్తంగా టీడీపీ, వైఎస్సార్సీపీలు కాంగ్రెస్‌ను దోషిగా నిలబెట్టేందుకు ప్రయత్నిస్తాయన్న చర్చ జరుగుతోంది. తెలంగాణ సమస్య మూలాలను తెలుసుకునేందుకు షిండే ఈ సమావేశం ఏర్పాటు చేశారని భావించే పరిస్థితి లేదు. మొత్తంగా రాజకీయ పార్టీలుగా అవి తెలంగాణపై ఏ దృష్టితో ఉన్నాయో తెలుసుకోవడం ఈ ‘అవగాహన’ సమావేశం ఉద్దేశంగా చెబుతున్నారు. కాబట్టి ఈ మూడు పార్టీలు తమ వైఖరిని చెప్పాల్సిన పరిస్థితి నెలకొంది. అందుకే ఈ సమావేశం ఆ మూడు పార్టీలకు జీవవన్మరణ సమస్యగానే మారుతోంది. కాంగ్రెస్, వైఎస్సార్సీపీ, టీడీపీ మినహా అన్ని పార్టీలు తమ వైఖరిని ఇప్పటికే స్పష్టం చేయడంతో, ఈ సమావేశంలో కచ్చితంగా సమాధానం చెప్పాల్సిన బాధ్యత కూడా ఇప్పుడు ఆ మూడు పార్టీలపై ఉంది. బాధ్యత నెరవేరుస్తాయా? భవిష్యత్తును చేజేతులా నాశనం చేసుకుంటాయా? అనేది ఆ పార్టీలు వెల్లడించే వైఖరిపైనే ఆధారపడి ఉంటుందనేది నిపుణుల విశ్లేషణ. వ్యతిరేకం కాదన్న మాటనే స్పష్టగా చెప్పి.. తెలంగాణ ఏర్పాటుకు అడ్డం తప్పుకోవాలనేది నాలుగు కోట్ల తెలంగాణ ప్రజల ఆకాంక్ష! పార్టీ వైఖరిని తేల్చి.. తెలంగాణ ప్రాంతంలో మనుగడకు అవకాశం కల్పించాలనేది ఆ మూడు పార్టీల్లోని తెలంగాణ నేతల ఆశ! అందుకే అందరి దృష్టీ అఖిలపక్షంపైనే!!

Singapore-bound, borne by a billion prayers

In a sudden move, the 23-year-old gang-rape victim was shifted from the capital’s Safdarjung Hospital at around 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday and flown out of the country in a special air-ambulance to Singapore. 

She was accompanied by her family members and a team of doctors. 

The victim will be admitted to Mt. Elizabeth Hospital in the city state, which has a super-speciality multi-organ transplant facility. 

The relatively short journey time to Singapore helped in making the decision, sources said. 

The government has made arrangements for the family’s stay in Singapore as the treatment is expected to take a while. 

Addressing the media late at night, Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. B. D. Athani said: “The victim is strong but her condition continues to be critical. She had extensive abdominal and intestinal injuries and despite three life-saving operations and best treatment by a team of doctors from Safdarjung, All-India Institute of Medical Sciences and G.B. Pant Hospital, her condition continued to be critical. After evaluation, the team decided that it was best to shift the patient abroad for treatment.” 

The patient was shifted out of Safdarjung Hospital amid tight security around 10.30 p.m. Three fully-equipped ambulances were lined up on the hospital premises and one of them moved the patient out. The move came after the patient endured a tough night on Tuesday, with a senior official in the Health Ministry stating that the girl’s condition had deteriorated with her pulse rate dropping considerably, forcing her doctors at Safdarjung Hospital to seek assistance from cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan and physicians at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to revive and stabilise the patient. 

The official added: “Her pulse rate had suddenly reduced to below 50-per-minute but she was revived.” 

Earlier in the day, doctors at Safdarjung Hospital remained tight-lipped about her condition and even skipped the daily routine of issuing a health bulletin. Refusing to give any details about the patient, Dr. Athani, when asked about the girl’s condition in the evening, said: “I don’t know.” 

Also, the patient’s family members who were previously talking to the press refused to interact. 

The hospital authorities also did not confirm any news about the deterioration in the patient’s condition. 

There was much speculation on the patient’s condition on Wednesday after the Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent postponed the routine daily press conference at 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. There was no briefing at 6.30 p.m. either. 

Moreover, police presence in and outside the hospital was beefed up.
